Dusted off your clubs yet? It's around this time of year that the golf-inclined start checking weather reports daily. Okay, hourly. With the exception of some West Coast players, the country is anxiously awaiting the first tee to emerge from snow and ice.

It may not ease your golf withdrawal to know this, but you're not alone. Women represent almost 25 per cent of adult golfers in Canada and the U.S. Like the majority of these women, I took up the sport later in life. The fastest growing segment of female golfers is between the ages of 18 and 29, but the average age of women golfers is 45. So while women have been starting later, they're staying longer.

I started to golf in my late thirties and had an immediate "aha" moment. What didn't surprise me was the social appeal—after all, when else do you get the chance to slow down, enjoy time with friends or get such an effective networking opportunity? What did surprise me was how strategic and athletic golf is.

As a fitness professional, I was intrigued by the integrated movement patterns of the golf swing. There are so many variables contributing to the end result: a well-struck ball. Success comes from a combination of skill, experience and conditioning.

Skill and experience require time and aren't always easy to come by. Conditioning, however, is something you can work on and benefit from each week, whether you're a scratch golfer or just getting started.

The following four exercises combine strength with direction and movement—key components to building that power swing. When possible, do them in front of a mirror to watch your technique and improve body awareness.
