Five great 50th birthday party ideas
We here at More believe that a 50th birthday party is a fabulous event—not the opportunity for a roast or over-the-hill jokes. (Over the hill—are you kidding?) So here are five ways to celebrate the 50th milestone birthday that will neither break the bank nor leave anyone feeling blue.
Go for the gold
The 50th party is technically the golden milestone, although those of us who remember The Golden Girls may be forgiven for thinking that sounds a bit—old. Still, gold is a great décor and gift theme.
If elegance is the celebratory style of the guest of honour, lay out a formal spread and accent white with gold; ask people to dress with gold in mind, and have a DJ and dancing based around gold record hit recordings. Other ways to incorporate gold (and quality): Gold medal-winning wines; recipes from award-winning chefs (or catered by the same).
"50 things about you"
This one requires some coordination, but have people contribute things about the birthday woman in advance—moments they remember, characteristics about her that they love—and put them together into a scrapbook. During the party stage a "this is your life" skit where you have people come up to talk about their contributions.
If you have time and energy, there are a lot of other ways to build on the number 50. You could coordinate baking to offer a platter of 50 different ways to serve chocolate (ask everyone to bring two); have centerpieces with jars of 50 jellybeans, and so on.
The "Bucket List" party
Whether or not you enjoyed the movie with Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman, the idea of the bucket list—things you want to do before you die—is intriguing. Here's the party idea: Watch a movie together that's inspiring. (If The Bucket List itself doesn't turn your crank, we recommend Julie & Julia.)
Then have everyone write a list of 10 things they want to do before they die. Break up into groups of similarly-minded people, and figure out how to get to those goals together.
