Breast cancer - your experiences
The October 2008 issue of More features a special section on breast health ("The Pair," page 129). In that section we've invited you to come online and talk about your experience with breast cancer - whether your own, your mother's, a friend's, or just a close call.
I've been lucky in my family - so far, knock wood - but I do have a good friend who had a mastectomy a few years back. When we started talking about the section for the magazine I realized that I hadn't thought to ask her about it in well over a year. I'd moved on to see her not as "my friend with breast cancer," but just as my friend again. But I wondered what her experience was. It turns out that she was glad I asked and we had a great conversation about appearance, fear, and recovery.
What's your take?

I am recently diagnosed with breast cancer, I've lucky to have caught it early. I'm also lucky to have all the support from my family, friends, my doctors, nurses and staff at the chemo clinic at Centennary Hospital. It's been hard, but I'm almost halfway of my treatment and looking forward to finish the treatments and hear that it's been successfull and I'm all clean.

Re: Breast cancer - your experiences
At 37 I was diagnosed with breast cancer. I had a lump in my breast for at least 6-8 months before anyone would do anything. At first they said come back next month; then come back after xmas; and then come back after your period. Because I had a previous lump that was harmless, it seemed that they were taking for granted that this one was the same. The lump was hard and was starting to hurt. Finally, when a reluctant doctor decided to do a biopsy, I was immediately sent to the hospital to have the lump and surrounding tissue removed. I was told there and then what it was before they even analysed it. Several rounds of radiation and chemotherapy and some really tought times, but here I am today alive and well at 51. My advice; if you feel that something is just not right, it probably isn`t. Don`t give up. Keep pushing until someone takes you seriously, see different doctor's if you have too. If I hadn't pushed the doctors do something, I would not be here today!

I think it is courageous that as women we stand up for ourselves. Sometimes doctors cannot catch everything, so it is up to us to go the extra mile and look at our bodies for ourselves. Doing self exams is a start, and a good one for sure, but making sure that if we feel something is not right is the next step and should be taken! no one knows our bodies better than ourselves!
