Banish winter blues

Despite the glory of the Vancouver Olympics and the lack of snow in certain parts of the country, many of us are still experiencing the winter blues. Here are some of our readers' tips to conquer the long gray days and make it to spring with a bounce in your step.

Get moving

One tip from our readers is to find a way to stay active. Suggestions include:

"I go ice skating at Harbourfront with my husband. The view of Lake Ontario is magnificent and makes you appreciate winter season living in Canada." - Linda Ross-Doyle

"I beat the winter blues by getting outside and staying active. Even though it is cold out it is nice to get out in the winter sunshine." - cc

"Regardless of the weather, I'm outside every day. I bundle up in layers and I pick a destination and away I go. I walk everywhere. My day and all my plans are based around my walking. There are no excuses not to walk. I just do it and it keeps me happy!" - Lenore Temple-Brown

"This is the second winter since I joined a gym and been exercising to Zumba, weights and pilates. I am feeling so much better, I drive home on a high! I'm not loosing weight but noticing my shape changing for the better. Winter is just breezing by!" - smperrott

The social season

Another tip: get moving, or partying, with friends and family.

"I have always found that an outing with the gals is a good way to get happy again. I have always had an issue with February. I think it is because my Vitamin D goes into the basement and with it my mood. Dinner and a movie with the gals can do wonders for me!" - Colleen C

"Put on some salsa music, wear bright-coloured clothing, gather your friends around you and party on like you would in South America in 25 degree heat." - Sandra Mooney

"We girls love to have a skating party. We all meet up at a rink and have a great time together just like we did when we were kids. Afterwards we go to a restaurant and enjoy a great meal more laughs and this make winter easier to bear." - adelia

"An afternoon of shopping with the girls, ending with a great meal at a local greasy spoon, always picks up my spirits". - Debra B
