Sometimes I think midlife is all about getting back to the question of "what brings us joy."

And if so, Julie & Julia is definitely a quintessentially midlife movie, even if one of the principle characters (Julie Powell) is experiencing more of a quarter-life crisis than a midlife one.

The movie follows both blogger Julie Powell as she cooks her way through Julia Child's "Mastering the Art of French Cooking" and Julia Child as she discovers her passion for food and cooking in Paris and writes the book that is - in the perhaps grandiose but not inaccurate words of the film - "going to change the world."

Although the editing stumbles at times, spending a bit too much time in modern-day Queens and a bit too little time in Paris (and other locations), this film really is just plain fun to watch. Streep is the actor who made it come alive for me. Not only does she seem to be channeling Child, she brings a vivacity and enthusiasm to the screen that makes me want to rush out and bond with every woman who's still looking for something to light her fire.

So get together your creative or culinary friends and check it out!
