From editor-in-chief Linda Lewis:
Out of the box. Out of your comfort zone. Out on a limb. (Or, so often in my case, out to lunch.) No matter which well-worn description you use, there’s something about getting out of your ordinary routine that is especially exhilarating at our age.
After all, to cite another cliché, we are all creatures of habit. And after more than 40 years of forming those habits, it’s easy to settle into complacency as if it were a comfy old sweater.
When our kids are little, parenting experts tell us, habitual ritual provides them with needed security. I know all about this not because I am a model parent, but because I edited Today’s Parent magazine for many years, and felt even more guilty than other moms when I missed the consistency mark.
But as our children grow up, they need to learn that newness is a necessary — even desired — part of life. When I was asked recently to give a 40-minute speech to a group of well-heeled women at a private home, I panicked. How come I can handle live television in front of a potential audience of hundreds of thousands, but this had me grabbing for Gravol? Then again, how can I tell my daughter not to fret over her English-class presentation if I’m sweating my own public speaking appearance the same week? >>>Read the rest of Linda's letter and get a behind-the-scenes peek at the February/March issue!
